Plot Summary
From Anime News Network - It is the year A.D. 2307. Fossil fuels on Earth have been depleted entirely, with mankind turning to the next available power source: solar energy. During this time, 3 orbital elevators with solar power generation systems are built, each under control by the Union of Solar Energy and Free Nations (formerly United States of America), the Human Reform League (Russia, China and India) and the Advanced European Union. However, not all countries are able to enjoy the benefits of this system, leading to widespread resentment and war. Arising out of the conflict, a mysterious military organization known as Celestial Being appears, dedicated to end all warfare using Mobile Suits called Gundam. This begins the stories of Gundam Meisters (pilots) Setsuna F. Seiei, Lockon Stratos, Allelujah Haptism and Tiera Erde as they are thrown into conflict between the 3 superpowers and the various other factions.
Animation
The animation of Gundam 00 is some of the best I’ve ever seen, disregarding the fact that Gundam is very well-known for its animation quality and style. It’s very different from Gundam SEED, the most recent series besides 00, showing how technology is advancing very rapidly, enabling producers to create anime at a higher animation quality.
Overall, I would give the animation a 9 out of 10.
Sound
The majority of the music was composed by Kenji Kawai, a well-known composer in Japan, who has composed music for quite a few famous series, such as Ghost in the Shell, and also Fate/Stay Night. The music he composed for Gundam 00 is dramatic, deep, and uses the orchestral potential to the maximum, for tracks such as “00 Gundam”, and “EXERCISE”.
The opening and ending themes were also very distinguished, as the songs were played by famous bands, such as THE BACK HORN, the brilliant green, and L’Arc~en~Ciel whilst also promoting lesser known artists, such as Stephanie and Taja.
Overall, I thought the music was splendid, and earnt a very well deserved 10 out of 10.
Story
The story or plotline of Gundam 00 is one of the best I’ve ever seen, it’s rich in depth, there aren’t many empty plotholes, and there is plenty of room in which it can develop. Unlike Gundam Wing, it isn’t too overly complex to get yourself lost in, but it just has enough in it to make you make you stop, think, and then make re-watch an episode again to fully understand and digest what just happened. The idea of an secret organization popping up to defeat the concept of war isn’t new, but the way the producers manipulate the idea is very original, and adds to the depth which the plotline has.
Overall, the plotline of Gundam 00 is excellent, though there is always room for improvement. It gets 9 out of 10.
Character
The characters in Gundam 00 are quite typical characters from your Gundam universe, you have your brooding, love-able main character, which is reminiscent of Heero Yuy from Gundam Wing. The other three main characters are very well-designed, with their pasts very complex and deep. There is a lot of room for these characters to develop throughout the series, which the producers do very well.
The other supporting characters also show that complexity as well, albeit less focused on, but the producers also try to build on their design, which works quite well in the end.
Overall, for characters, I would give it a 8.5 out of 10.
Overall
Gundam 00 is such a pleasant series to watch, plenty of action, plenty of drama, suspense, even a bit of romance to spice things up. These factors is what make Gundam 00 such an excellent series to watch, with those points I discussed above adding to it. I would recommend it to anyone, you will fall in love with it almost instantly.
Overall, I would rate this series, 9 out of 10.
